Henna is a plant based dye. I only use the most natural form and NEVER use chemicals or other unatural things in my henna paste. Henna in it's natural form is a plant, and once ground can be mixed with things such as water, lemon juice, and oils to release the dye.
Henna stains the skin a light orange color when it is first removed, and darkens to a medium red-dark redish brown color over 24 hours. If you have recently used lotion, henna will not stain as darkly.
Henna once stained can last anywhere between 2-3 weeks as it fades. The longer you leave the paste on your skin, the darker the stain will be, so it's always a good idea to leave it on as long as you can if you want the stain to last a long time. The only time henna becomes permanant is if a cut is henna'd over. I always wipe down skin with alcohol, and look over the skin to make sure there is no broken skin before I henna. Henna will not be permanant if you cut yourself with a stain on you skin. However, if you have henna on your skin and you cut yourself where the henna is, rinse off the henna immediately so it won't stain the wound.
